Farewell, Uganda: A Journey Etched in the Heart

Post 3/3 – The final chapter of our Ugandan voyage. If you haven’t delved into 1/3 and 2/3 yet, I invite you to return to those narratives before indulging in this last piece.

Hello once more, dear wanderers!

Embarking on a soulful Ugandan voyage, we discovered a land of roaring waterfalls, vibrant cultures, and heartfelt connections that forever etched themselves into our hearts.

Discovering Murchison Falls and Beyond

Our journey through Uganda was an odyssey of soul-stirring experiences. We embarked on a two-day non-hunting safari at Murchison Falls, courtesy of Bushmen Safaris. The wild landscapes brought us face-to-face with lions, giraffes, hartebeest, hippos, jackals, and more. Floating the Nile with Wild Frontiers Nile River Safaris, we marveled at nature’s splendors. In particular, the formidable Murchison Falls, the world’s most potent waterfall, and its more modest counterpart, the Uhuru (Freedom) Falls, left us stunned—a hike around these majestic cascades culminated in a refreshing treat of fresh pineapple.

Celebrating the 4th from Afar

Our stay in Uganda overlapped with the 4th of July, a holiday deeply entrenched in our American identity. A touching nod to home: a group of young missionaries from Love Africa journeying alongside us on the safari. They formed the letters “USA” with their bodies, a patriotic spectacle against the lush Ugandan backdrop. We joined them in laughter and took a moment to reflect on the world’s interconnectedness and how love for one’s homeland can be celebrated no matter where the journey takes you.

Cultural Evenings at Nkundwa Nile View Lodge: A Showcase of Uganda’s Rich Traditions

The Nkundwa Nile View Lodge further enriched our journey. Every night became a cultural celebration, peaking during our last when local villagers treated us to a spellbinding performance of traditional instruments and dances around a roaring fire. Although the type of wood they burned left me wheezing, the evening showcased Uganda’s rich traditions. The lodge’s endeavors are twofold: preserving local customs and promoting community growth.

As we roamed the safari terrains, our guide, humorously named “Eagle Power” after translating his local name, became more of a friend than a guide. His infectious laughter and invaluable insights made every moment memorable. After bidding the lodge farewell, our paths led to Entebbe and, subsequently, to heartfelt moments in Kampala.

Tranquility at the Uganda Buddhist Center in Entebbe

The climax of our adventure in Uganda beckoned as Lena and I explored more hidden gems and nurtured bonds that will, I’m certain last a lifetime. Nestled amidst the bustling energy of Entebbe, the Uganda Buddhist Center offered a serene embrace. This sanctuary, where we felt the most familiarity in this foreign land, contrasted with the vibrant life outside, presented us with peace and introspection amidst a beautiful Ugandan backdrop. Explore their impactful initiatives in this YouTube video.

The Uganda Buddhist Centre, steadfast in its mission to share Buddha’s teachings and cultivate peace, is truly making a difference. On my next trip to Uganda, I’m committed to dedicating more time to this remarkable place, serving the community, and engaging with the devoted Sangha.

Amidst the serene setting of the Uganda Buddhist Centre, a sign pointing towards a Seventh-day Adventist church caught my eye. A poignant blend of my past and present beliefs, I captured this image with my late grandmother in mind. Raised as a Seventh-day Adventist, I’ve since embraced Buddhism, yet seeing this sign in the heart of Uganda reminded me of her unwavering support for my journey and work. I regret never getting to share this moment with her, but it stands as a testament to the intertwined paths of faith and memory.

A Nostalgic Visit to Kampala

From there, our journey took a nostalgic turn to Kampala. Here, we ventured to the childhood home of my dear Agri Planet Africa colleagues. Traveling the local way via buses and boda-bodas, we embraced every shade of Ugandan authenticity. Their family’s warm embrace, paired with a sumptuous feast, painted an evening of laughter, stories, and unfading memories.

Endings & New Beginnings at Anderita Beach Hotel

Returning to Anderita Beach Hotel in Entebbe signified our journey’s impending conclusion. Yet, a swift flight rescheduling gifted us more hours in Uganda. Lena and I, grabbing this chance, strolled Victoria Mall, soaking in Ugandan vibrancy one last time before our multi-leg flight: EBB > BRU > IAD > ORD > OKC.

An Inspired Vision

The people we met, from passionate locals to resilient refugees, ignited enthusiasm in us to champion the causes close to their hearts. Bolstered by our journey, our commitment to organizations like CIYOTA, Love Africa, and the Uganda Buddhist Center deepened, envisaging future collaborations. The unity we witnessed, transcending religious or cultural differences, spoke of the indomitable human spirit.

Our farewell to Uganda wasn’t just about leaving a place but about cherishing experiences, friendships, lessons, and even Lena’s light-hearted marriage proposals (with ongoing cow dowery negotiations!). I’m reminded that travel transcends places or photographs; it’s about soulful connections and personal growth.

As we bid Uganda farewell, its essence remains with us, awaiting our next adventure. For the world is vast, and our journey has just begun.

Until our paths cross again,
Janelle Nightingale
