Embarking on a Transformative Ugandan Odyssey
Hello fellow adventurers,
Welcome to the enthralling tale of our Ugandan odyssey – a journey filled with excitement, cultural exploration, and unexpected detours. As the Executive Director of Agri Planet Africa, I was excited to visit our team in Uganda. This trip was not only an opportunity to connect with our project’s progress but also a chance to immerse myself in the rich tapestry of Ugandan life. Recommended by CIYOTA, I joined forces with the Love Africa Christian mission group, setting the stage for a remarkable adventure that transcended the boundaries of religion and embraced the spirit of unity. Despite my Buddhist beliefs, their warm welcome and invitation to lead Team 2 showcased the beauty of diversity and camaraderie during our international travels. Our journey began excitedly at Will Rogers Airport, but unforeseen flight cancellations and alternate routes added unexpected twists to our story. As we ventured through Washington D.C., Rwanda, and finally landed in Entebbe, Uganda, we discovered that life’s journey is as much about the detours as it is about the destinations. Unexpected Flight Cancellation: A Dampened Start
Our adventure began on June 22, when my daughter, Lena, and I arrived at Will Rogers Airport, full of anticipation for the journey ahead. However, our excitement was dampened when we were informed at 5 am of an unexpected flight cancellation several hours prior. A warning from American Airlines would have been greatly appreciated!
Embracing Alternate Reroutes: A Journey through Washington D.C.
Rather than leaving on the next flight out the following day, I pressed for some alternate reroutes that day. Our new flight plan took us from OKC to DCA in Washington D.C. and then to IAD the following day. While Lena rested at the hotel, I explored D.C., only slightly thwarted by heightened security around the White House, preventing me from getting even an eyeshot of it. Nevertheless, I caught a glimpse of the iconic Washington Monument before returning.
Arriving in Entebbe, Uganda: The Unplanned Adventure
Finally, on the afternoon of June 23, we embarked on a series of flights from IAD in D.C. to Brussels, then Rwanda. Eventually, we landed in Entebbe, Uganda, on June 24, around 10 pm local time. Although it wasn’t the initially planned route, the journey was an adventure in itself, reminding us of the importance of embracing the unexpected on the rollercoaster of travel.
Surreal Introduction to Ugandan Nightlife
Our introduction to Ugandan nightlife was surreal. Navigating through Entebbe’s almost phantom streets in a taxi, we arrived at the gated confines of the Anderita Beach Hotel. Seeing an armed civilian guard open the gate and a small truck of uniformed military personnel brandishing similar rifle weapons rolling past our vehicle stirred some unease. However, as dawn broke and unveiled the stunning surroundings, our apprehensions faded into anticipation.
Extraordinary Experiences in Uganda
We stood on the threshold of an array of extraordinary experiences: living shoulder to shoulder with missionaries and refugees at the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, partaking in deep, meaningful dialogues with locals, including a councilman from an indigenous tribe. Our journey was interspersed with unexpected moments like receiving marriage proposals, trekking through the bush, and planting trees. We reveled in the rich taste of fresh fruits plucked straight from the trees, newly-cut sugarcane’s crisp sweetness, and local vegan dishes. An episode of a flat tire in a village, drawing a crowd of curious faces eager to observe the ‘Mzungus’ with their unusual skin color, became an indelible part of our colorful travel mosaic. Embracing the Unpredictable: Lessons from Uganda
As the saying goes, life is a journey, not a destination, and our travel to Uganda was no exception. Despite the unexpected flight cancellation and security concerns, we found excitement in these unexpected detours and learned to appreciate the unpredictable nature of travel.
