Expedition to Uganda: Part 2
Hello again, fellow globetrotters!
As we ventured further into our Ugandan journey, our hearts were brimming with anticipation for the awe-inspiring encounters and cultural revelations that lay ahead. The vibrant pulse of Uganda embraced us as we immersed ourselves in its stunning landscapes and soul-stirring traditions.

Lake Albert: A Breathtaking Canvas
Our expedition kicked off with a captivating journey to Lake Albert, nestled near the Congo border, a breathtaking canvas painted by nature. We reached the Bugoma landing site, where we found ourselves on the shores of the massive lake, whose serene waters mirrored the sky above and framed by verdant hills. We saw what appeared to be caught Nile perch in a basket that locals had caught earlier in the day. We paid a local fisherman to take us out on a boat to the moving island (one morning, it is here, and the following day it is there, but in a vicinity). First, my colleague had to ensure they would not take our money and leave us in the middle of the lake. The Bugoma landing site is a trading area between Uganda and the Congo, and sometimes, fishermen will tell traders in the middle of the lake, “Your money or your life, you choose.” Luckily, we got there and back safely.

Exploring the Cornfields of Kasungwa
After leaving the soothing calm of Lake Albert, we ventured into the thriving cornfields of Kasungwa. The journey took us to an Agri Planet Africa’s maize project. As we walked through the lush maize fields, the bush seemed to cling to us, adorning our clothing with numerous stickers. It took us a fun-filled hour to remove out all the stubborn hitchhikers – a small yet endearing memory.

A Pause in Rwengabi and a Special Celebration
Life had a surprise in store for us in the form of a flat tire in the remote community of Rwengabi. Far from being a hindrance, this pause in our journey presented an opportunity to celebrate a special occasion. The villagers were curious and quickly gathered around to see us, the Muzungu, with our white skin. Wanting some privacy, we moved from the main street to a more secluded spot, patiently waiting for the tire to be repaired. I had brought a birthday gift for a two-year-old girl named Janelle, a radiant child sharing my name and being my friend’s daughter. We used the downtime to open gifts, revel in shared laughter, and enjoy the simple pleasure of a small-town birthday celebration.

I presented Janelle with a cherished present – a signed copy of “Nia’s Vibrant Colors: An African American Mythological Tale,” authored by my friend and grad school classmate, Kristin Murray. This gift was not just a book but an inspiring message from the author herself. Despite us attending grad school together, Kristin managed to publish this masterpiece during our time there. Understanding that maintaining numerous possessions, as is commonplace in US households, is less practical in Uganda’s smaller homes, I aimed for a gift that would be both special and mindful of space constraints.
The Grand Opening of Kobusinge’s Community Permaculture Resource Center
As the Ugandan sun cast its golden rays on our next day of adventure, we found ourselves in the welcoming embrace of Kobusinge. It was a special day, for we were there for the grand opening of Agri Planet Africa‘s second Community Permaculture Resource Center. This marked yet another milestone in our commitment to fostering sustainable agriculture and nurturing Uganda’s greener, brighter future.
In a ceremony brimming with symbolic promise, we plunged our hands into the fertile soil to plant the first of many trees. By the day’s end, we had nurtured 110 saplings into the ground, their roots reaching deep, mirroring our firm commitment to this land and its people. To complement our future forest, we also sowed several sweet potato plants. Each plant symbolized the nourishment and knowledge this community resource center aimed to provide.

The day was made all the more meaningful as around 70 enthusiastic volunteers joined us. Among them were three devoted individuals from Love Africa, Mae, Hana, and Tirzah, whose passion and dedication left an indelible mark on our hearts. We named three of our newly constructed cottages after them to honor their contribution. Meanwhile, the educational facility was christened ‘Lena,’ after my daughter, a nod to her unwavering support. As for me, the conference center was humbly dedicated in my name, Janelle, a gesture that warmed my heart and deepened my bond with this beautiful land.

After the inaugural festivities, we gathered around a tree for its shade for a comprehensive two-hour meeting with the locals. The meeting was an opportunity for a deep dive into agricultural discussions, covering its potential benefits, possible pitfalls, and the challenges farmers often face. Our team at Agri Planet Africa was keen to listen, learn, and find ways to alleviate these pain points.

In keeping with our mission and to celebrate the successful launch of the resource center, we sponsored a hearty vegan lunch for all the volunteers. Brimming with local flavors, the meal was a wonderful way to end the day – breaking bread together under the African sun, celebrating a step forward in our shared mission.

Embracing Uganda’s Heart
These snapshots from our journey do little justice to the range of experiences we had each day in Uganda. From captivating wildlife encounters to shared meals with local families, learning about Ugandan landscape and landmarks, and exploring bustling markets filled with vibrant local crafts – every moment brought us closer to the heart of Uganda.

Stay with me as I unveil more captivating tales from our Ugandan journey, where I discovered that travel is more than just seeing new places; it’s about living them, experiencing their soul, and letting them change you in ways you never anticipated.
Until the next chapter,
Janelle Nightingale
